A perfect day in Grainau: Kayak to Lake Eibsee

Lake Eibsee is one of the most beautiful and well-known alpine lakes. You can go around the lake on foot or by bike, and there are many places ideal for sunbathing and taking a dip in the cool water, which is a real pleasure, especially on warm summer days. While the trails are very busy on fine days, there is still plenty of peace and space on the water. So our tip for today: kayaking!

We in Grainau enjoy Lake Eibsee at any time of the year. Turquoise-blue water or silver-colored ice, breathtaking Zugspitze views at lofty heights, forest, sun and rocks — anyone who visits Lake Eibsee once will remember the day forever. Kayaking on Lake Eibsee is also a special experience. With its eight islands, each of which has its own character, Lake Eibsee offers an opportunity to make a day of paddling varied and meditative.

3:30 p.m.: On a sunny Saturday, we unload our kayaks to the left in front of the hiking trail on Lake Eibsee. Unfortunately, the boat rental at Lake Eibsee does not offer kayak rentals. Kayaking is therefore only possible for paddlers who bring their own boats or rent kayaks elsewhere. Right behind the Eibsee boat rental, there is a good way to get into the water.

4:00 p.m.: At the beginning of our tour today, we'll do a short round on the Untersee. The small lake has no sidewalks on the shore, so only ducks and grebes disturb the idyllic peace. The water is as smooth as glass and transparent; in the blue depths under the boat, you can see trout flashing in the sun from time to time.

4:30 p.m.: Now we're paddling with the kayaks towards Sassen Island. The largest island in Lake Eibsee is covered with dense forest and blueberry bushes. On hot days, pine trees provide shade and liven up the air with a fresh forest scent. First, we pass Braxen Island and Schönbichl. Civil weddings were held on the flat picturesque Maximilian Island until 2015. Other islands are partly in shade in the afternoon, which is very pleasant in summer heat.

6:00 p.m.: After paddling, we stop at the rocks opposite Sassen Island and spend the remaining hours swimming until sunset. The cool water refreshes and invigorates the body.

For all those who do not own a kayak but would like to explore the Eibsee and its islands on the water, the boat rental a selection of different water companions. Stand-up paddle boards in particular are currently in vogue. Rowing boats, paddleboats and slide boats can also be rented. So what are you waiting for! Enjoy the hot days on Lake Eibsee with the Zugspitze always in view.
