About our Badersee

Lake Badersee is more than just a hotel. It is a place of encounters for valuable experiences, inspiring exchanges and varied relaxation. “Experience together” connects people at the bar and in the restaurant, in nature and in the SPA, at a conference and an event.

A story that spans generations
What began with a small inn is now a meeting place for relaxation, exercise and dialogue.
1871-1877
In 1871, the Grainau Benefit acquired Lake Badersee and built a house here with a restaurant and viewing platform. Even King Ludwig II was already a guest here with his mother Marie of Bavaria. However, the king decided that no priest should carry out a restoration and so in 1877 a new owner was found who expanded the complex.

1890
An entrance portal with a post office to Lake Badersee welcomed guests around 1890.
1894
The company was converted into an AG and a first hotel was built. In 1912, the owner changed again and managed the old Badersee until 1974.

1896
According to legend, King Ludwig II sinks a life-size mermaid made by sculptor Brechtl around 1900 in Lake Badersee.
end of 19th century
At the end of the 19th century, a restaurant and a hotel were built on Lake Badersee.

1903
At the beginning of the 20th century, the hotel was enlarged facing the lake and offered more rooms for holidaymakers.
1910
In front of the majestic mountain scenery of Waxenstein and Zugspitze, the hotel sits right on Lake Badersee — around 1910.

1914
Lake Badersee is fed by cold, fresh, clear springs and offers barges a unique rowing experience — framed in a perfect natural setting. Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie carried out hydrological investigations in the lake around 1914.
1918
The Hotel Badersee offers guests a shuttle service with its own convertible bus from Untergrainau train station and also from Garmisch to the hotel — around 1918.

1930
The impressive extension built in the 1930s and a large lakeside terrace offer walkers a view of the Tyrolean Ammer Mountains across Lake Badersee.
1960
In the 1960s, the hotel opened with large windows to Lake Badersee during a comprehensive renovation of the building.

1960
Even in bad weather, the winter garden offers an unobstructed view of Lake Badersee — furnished in true style in the spirit of the 1960s with kidney tables.
1974
This year, the former Bavarian Raiffeisen Association acquired the hotel in order to build a training center for the Bavarian Cooperatives. As a result, the building was converted and expanded.

1996 - 2010
In 1996, the old lake house was demolished and the current lake house with 52 spacious rooms, function rooms and the Werdenfels restaurant was built in its place. The house was now open to the public and was categorized as 4-star at the end of 2010.
2012
In 2012, the old forest house was completely gutted and 87 modern country house rooms, the beautiful country house spa, a day bar and an atrium with meeting rooms were created.

2025
After 50 years as a training center run by the Bavarian Cooperatives, the historic hotel on Lake Badersee in Grainau has received a new owner. In 2025, Meine Volksbank Raiffeisenbank eG took over the house.
