A perfect day in Grainau: sledding on the Zugspitze

If you want to experience fast-paced downhill runs and fun on the slopes without being on skis or snowboards, you should try out the toboggan runs on the Zugspitze. That is exactly what we are planning to do today.

10:30 a.m.: Take the Eibsee bus to Lake Eibsee and from there take the gondola up to the Zugspitze. As always, the gondola driver has a few good and funny sayings in store, so it's going to be an easy ride once again. At the middle station, there is once again a murmur through the cabin as the gondola makes a slight sway and, of course, the cameras and smartphones click around us with the view of the snow-covered mountain landscape that is once again becoming more and more beautiful.

11:30 a.m.: Once on the Zugspitze, it's first up to the viewing platform. Somehow you can't get enough of this fantastic view. And that's how our smartphones and cameras click for later winter greetings to family and friends. You also have to say goodbye to the most beautiful view, after all, we still want to experience rapid descents.

12:00 o'clock: At each sled hut, we get a pointed bob. Cost per person €8.00. We are asked whether we need a helmet or ski goggles. No, we just go sledding after all. A hat and sunglasses are completely sufficient. From the toboggan hut, we head to the starting point of the slopes and then it's time to hit the seats, ready, go. My buddy drives ahead and I drive behind after a while and with a sufficient distance. Wow, I didn't expect that much speed. My cap slowly comes off my head due to the wind, snow splashes into my face, vision disappeared in no time at all through the sunglasses. I try to hold the bob with one hand and my hat with the other. And how does steering work now? Somehow I manage to get through the first few corners, barely, but I just barely get the bend together. But the worst part is further down and that's when my hat doesn't stay on my head anymore. She ends up in the snow while she continues down the hill at speed in the hope of mastering the curves and arriving safely at the end.

And Roughly Does it look like...

We did it — we survived the first downhill run, but how! We both look like we've bathed in the snow. The hair is full of snow, slightly icy, you can no longer see anything through the sunglasses, as they are also decorated with snow. Fortunately, now comes the cozy part: taking the chairlift back up to the starting point.

12:30 p.m.: Once back at the top, we trudge back to the toboggan hut. 2x helmets and 2x ski goggles are needed. Cost €10.00 per person. We also ask for braking tips. It's time to pull the tip upwards. Okay, let's try that then. Back at the starting point, we immediately feel safer. The helmet fits, the ski goggles a bit, but they offer more protection than the sunglasses. I'm starting this time. The first stretch is going well, but there are suddenly people on the slopes further down. Brakes??? Pulling up doesn't necessarily work either. When it comes to speed, the only thing that helps is the ejection seat. But with soft landing and protected with a helmet. So it doesn't matter if you make a few more turns in the snow due to the speed.

After the track is clear again, you can continue. In the lower section, remember the hat. My buddy has already done this, but it also required an ejection seat. We have mastered the second downhill run! And we're in the mood for more.

15:00 o'clock: We've had a few rapid descents. It also knocked us out of corners a few times, so we are all the happier that we opted for a helmet after all. I think for many skiers off the toboggan run, our falls were certainly funny to watch. I haven't had so many snow splashes and slides in a long time. But everything turned out well and we had a lot of fun doing it ourselves.

Our Conclusion: Tobogganing on the Zugspitze is really amazing and it will certainly not be the last time to exchange skis for pointed bob. Maybe at some point we'll figure out how the steering and brakes work. After we have returned our rental equipment to the toboggan hut, we treat ourselves to a hot drink and toast our first toboggan run.
