Hiking to Stepbergalm (1,592 m)

Guest post by Chrissie Buchwieser

10:30 a.m.: The starting point of my hike today is the Berggasthof Almhütte at the foot of the gigantic Kramer. I park my car in the Maximilianshöhe car park. In the cozy alpine hut, pedestrians and hikers can enjoy a hearty meal. The alpine hut is primarily known for its gigantic cream puffs and is therefore often referred to as the “Windbeutelalm”. For me, however, it's going straight on, as I've already had a hearty breakfast at home.

10:45 a.m.: My journey starts right at the picturesque Kramerplateauweg. This trail is characterized by the breathtaking mountain landscape and the surrounding nature. Past the idyllic Kneipp pool, which is available to every hiker, the leisurely trail takes you to the beautiful Herrgottschrofen square in just a few minutes. At this point I reach the crossroads and turn onto the crossroads on the right, which leads to Stepbergalm. I keep following the signs and finally come across a small path.

11:00 a.m.: From here, the trail leads upwards through dense, green forests and mountain meadows. Along the beautiful hiking trail, I pass small mountain streams that find their way through the rocky boulders into the valley. Time and again I can discover small, curious forest animals that accompany me a bit on my hike. In order not to frighten the lovely forest animals, I make sure to keep the forest rest and move calmly. The small path meanders further and further through the forests and gradually gains altitude.

11:45 a.m.: After I have already covered a considerable number of meters in altitude, a majestic landscape opens up in front of me, offering an incomparable view of the surrounding mountains and the small Garmisch-Partenkirchen below me. I'm making a short stop to take a break from drinking. I listen to the gentle concert of natural music and let it have an effect on me. Although I live here and enjoy traveling in the mountains, I always discover the fascinating beauty of the huge rock walls that pile up in front of me and the moss-covered rocks that give the area a fantastic atmosphere. The scent of firs and moss fills the air. It increases my sense of happiness and makes me feel connected to nature.

12:00 p.m.: I resolutely continue my ascent, diving ever deeper into the pristine splendor of nature. With every step I take, I'm looking forward to the long-awaited destination of the hut, where not only well-earned peace but also a spectacular view awaits me.

12:30 p.m.: The air is getting fresher, the trees are getting fewer. I finally reach the end of the forest range and can already see the roof of Stepbergalm from afar. I can also clearly hear the first voices of the other hikers. The vast mountain meadows with grazing cows and the peaceful atmosphere invite you to relax. A refreshment with local specialities is also the perfect reward for my advancement. I traditionally order a snack platter with bacon, cheese and fruit and enjoy the peace and quiet of nature in the meantime.

1:30 p.m.: After I have recharged my batteries and spent some time enjoying the charm of Stepbergalm, it is time for me to return again. The approximately 2-hour descent is just as impressive as the climb.

In a world that is often hectic and stressful, a hike to Stepbergalm offers a nice and relaxing break. It is a place where you can connect with nature, relax and truly appreciate the charm of the mountain landscape around you.

Tips & info:

  • How to get there: It is best to drive to the car park on Maximilianhöhe. Long-lasting hikers can also start directly from the Hotel am Badersee and climb the Kramerplateauweg (at least 2.5 hours more time required).
  • Places to stop for refreshments: Berggasthof Stepbergalm, Berggasthof Almhütte “Windbeutelalm”. Check opening and season times online.
  • Further ascent: Persevering and experienced hikers can walk further up from Stepbergalm to the summit of Kramer. ATTENTION: From spring to mid-May, there is often still a lot of snow on the summit.
