One of the most popular events in Zugspitzland certainly includes the “Wank Unplugged” event, a concert on the summit of the Wank Mountain at 1,780 m. Musically, bands and artists from Bavaria create a terrific atmosphere.

When the weather is good, the concert will take place outside the Sonnenalm; in bad weather, it will be moved indoors. For the second time, I too am participating in “Wank Unplugged” and hope that the sun will shine again this time.

11:30 a.m.: We still find a parking space below the Wank gondola and get ready for our hike up the Wank. The weather is super nice today, but it's already quite hot at lunchtime, so a head covering is pretty good. We calculated about 4 hours for the climb, with breaks along the way. The concert itself starts at 18:00, so we have enough time for the climb, a refreshment at the Sonnenalm Hütte and a nice break before the concert. The trail climbs continuously uphill and soon we are enjoying the first view of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

12:30 p.m.: After just over an hour, we're at the middle station. Here we take a short break, then we continue towards the summit. From now on, there are numerous bends to overcome until we reach the summit. After all, we are always rewarded with great views along the way.

3:45 p.m.: We have finally reached the summit and are looking back at the last bends and meters. Now we've earned some culinary refreshments and walk over to Sonnenalm, where we get a free table. Well satiated, it's time to soak up some sun and put your legs up until the concert starts.

5:00 p.m.: We're looking for our perfect spot to follow the concert. We are lucky and catch three more deckchairs, which we grab, as Polina will also join us, who has gone on a long hike up the Hohe Fricken and then on the Wank and will be here shortly before 18:00. The meadows and seats around the concert are filling up more and more, the atmosphere is great, no wonder, the weather is simply heavenly.

6:15 p.m.: The group starts playing and heats up the visitors. There is dancing and singing along, at least those who already know the band and are therefore sure of the lyrics sing along loudly. Everyone else gets in when a few passages of text are repeated. Once again, we enjoy a great concert in front of a breathtaking backdrop. Even a paraglider stops by the concert and makes a few curves over the band.

8:45pm: After the concert is over and all encores have been played, we are now taking the gondola back down to the valley. We are already looking forward to the next “Wank Unplugged” and hope that the weather will be as good as it is today.

Tips & info:

• The concert “Wank Unplugged” usually takes place in July. Dates can be found on the Zugspitze website under Events.
• The ticket price includes an ascent and descent as well as admission to the event.
• The tickets are limited and sell out quickly. About a week before the start of the event, ticket sales will be opened again when it is foreseeable that the weather will be good and that the concert can take place outside.
• It is forbidden to spend the night on the Wank.
• Since it gets cooler in the evening, it's better to pack warmer things. A picnic blanket for the floor is also recommended, as there is only a few seating areas.
• During the concert, you can buy drinks, ice cream and small snacks. Please be careful not to leave any trash behind.
• Before the concert, the two huts on the Wank invite you to stop off.
